AFRICA: Bon and Mari/Laxmi Can't Get Enough! Solar Eclipse in Gabon no Less! travel blog

From Bonnie's Journal

The next morning I planned to walk to the bus station both to get some exercise before sitting on the bus for 12 hours (turned out to be 14), and to save the 30R cab fare. Plus I hoped to get there early enough to get a front seat (it was open seating). Our bus was to arrive in Bloem @ midnight, therefore we'd need to spend the night somewhere - the earliest bus to Lesotho didn't leave until 6 a.m. Since we were so late deciding on our bus schedule it was now too late to book a hostel online. So at 7:30 a.m. the next morning I was at the hostel reception asking Lucas if he knew of anything. He didn't, but he started looking. It got to be 9:00 when I planned to start walking, but Lucas was still looking. Mari had ordered a taxi for 9:00 but it wasn't there yet. At 9:15 I decided I'd have to take the taxi with Mari. Lucas was still looking. 9:30 - we were to be there by 10 a.m. regular time. No taxi. Lucas had to divert from accommodations to call the taxi to find out why the taxi he'd ordered at 8:30 for 9:00 hadn't arrived yet. "it will be there in a few minutes".

By now we're both getting a bit worried - we couldn't miss this bus! - and also annoyed. 9:45 Lucas found us a place to stay! Country Inn, cabin, 125R each. Taxi from the bus station, 24 hr checkin. YAY Lucas!! Now if only the darn taxi would get there! It finally did, at 9:50 - 1 hour 20 minutes after it was ordered! Taxis in CT are the pits, and not cheap: 1 km = 30-40R, 50-60R at night. But Cape Town Backpackers is Great! In any case, we got there expecting to find a long line, but there was no line - the bus was late (even though originating there, go figure). We were in luck. So we started a line! and we got front seats after all. What luck! The ride was good, glad we went in the day so we could see the countryside (much like Namibia as it turned out), but one word to the wise: Intercape is a Christian

outfit. If you don't want to be assailed with proselytizing music, videos of services and talks, and Christian movies, best to go with a different bus line. We didn't know, but wished we had. It gets old on a 14 hr. ride if that isn't your thing. Who would have thought?! Anyway, at 1:10 a.m. we pulled in to Bloem, and by 1:25 a.m. were in our cabin. Good place, again, Thank You Lucas!
