The Kentucky Derby takes place annually on the first Saturday in May, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Since the first Kentucky Derby Race was run in 1875 and won by Aristides, it has become a tradition for women attending the event to wear special hats to mark the occasion. As the race became more and more popular, the attendants began to have more fun with their fashion hat attire, donning hats with flamboyant embellishments including ribbons, feathers, and floral arrangements. The hat was the main part of the woman's attire and was usually paired with a simple matching cocktail dress.

Of course the museum covers this part of the derby beautifully. There are many unique, colorful & beautiful creations on display. As well as many that were worn by celebrities over the past years. I don't wear a hat very often. They tend to give me a headache very quickly and I find them too hot. But, there are times when one comes in handy and I can certainly understand why the derby would be one of those times. Sun protection for the head, neck & shoulders would certainly be necessary on a hot May day.

While checking out the exhibits we learned that the Kentucky Derby and Oaks are host to some of the largest and most diverse displays of hat-donning visitors in the world. The styles of hats worn ranged from fashionable and classy to that of absolute hilarity and flippancy. And, there is also superstition involved in choosing the perfect hat, as many Downs-goers believe the hats improve one's luck of choosing the winning horse. Really????

Well, hope you enjoy seeing some of these creations. After all, if a girl's gonna spend somewhere between $200-$3,000 for their newest 'Derby', someone better be noticing and appreciating it, lol!
