We had another one of those “Wowser” drives today. We drove over Independence Pass to Aspen, this is also known as “The Top of the Rockies" scenic byway. It was incredible!
This area is surrounded by stunning scenery at altitudes that rarely drop below 9,000 feet and climb up to 12,095 feet at the Independence Pass Summit. We were completely surrounded by the largest collection of 13,000 and 14,000 feet mountain peaks in the nation, truly at the “Top of the Rockies". The route can be traveled between Memorial Day and early November. We can’t wait to go back and drive this one again during the fall foliage season, some of the aspens are already beginning to change colors.
This was our first visit to Aspen too. It is a gorgeous city surrounded by more beautiful mountains, well known for skiing and the gondola rides. Aspen was founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom and named because of the abundance of aspen trees in the area. In the late 20th century, the city became a popular retreat for celebrities.
Singer John Denver wrote two songs about Aspen after settling there. Both of them popularized Aspen among the countercultural youth of the 1970s as an ideal place to live. The downtown has been largely transformed into an upscale shopping district that includes high-end restaurants, salons, and boutiques. Aspen boasts Ralph Lauren, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Bvlgari, Burberry, Brioni and more.
We enjoyed shopping at the Saturday Aspen Market, the prices were much more in our range. After shopping we had wonderful pizza at Mezzaluna’s. Another wonderful day in Colorado, check back later for more.
Happy Birthday Cecil! We wish you could have spent the day with us on this beautiful drive.
