One of our neighbors told us not to miss the Dennis Weaver Memorial Park while staying in Ridgway. We were so glad he told us about this awesome park. We enjoyed just sitting by the river and watching the birds in the area.
It is a magical place of reflection and relaxation dedicated to the memory and vision of actor/environmentalist Dennis Weaver. I loved watching him as "Chester" in Gunsmoke.
This 60-acre public park is a permanent wildlife preserve along the lush Uncompahgre River corridor and is at the entrance to Dennis Weaver's eco-friendly RiverSage Subdivision surrounded by 130 acres including the park. Within the park are miles of winding hiking and biking trails with spectacular mountain and river vistas.
The adjacent maintained walk along the river is approximately two miles round-trip from the Eagle Memorial to the Railroad Bridge in town and back. The Dennis Weaver Memorial Park has a lovely picnic area along the river. We plan a return trip just to have a picnic beside the beautiful river.
Our neighbor also knew Dennis when he lived here. He told us Dennis was a huge part of the annual 4th of July celebrations in the area, that he was always part of the parade etc. That he was a friend that was totally down to earth and was a wonderful neighbor.
The highlight of the park is the huge American Bald Eagle sculpture. This magnificent cast bronze boasts a wingspan of 21 feet and weighs in at 2,800 pounds. I took a few pictures of Jerry next to it for a size comparison. It is a beautiful place to visit, do not miss this one if you are in the Ridgway area. Another great day in Colorado, check back later for more.
