|A quiet start to the day today after the travel of the last couple of days. We spent the morning wandering around the grounds of the chateau checking out the chapel and having a row on the small lake. We then headed off into Combourg for lunch and a walking tour of the town. Towering over the town is the chateau built between the 13th and 15th centuries - they didn't rush things in those days. Most of the buildings in town, in fact most of the buildings in this part of the country, are built of granite that give them an appearance of solidity and longevity. Most of the rooves are slate on high-pitched rooves.
The Hooppells had decided to go into Saint Malo and so after a quick lunch we decided to follow them although with some trepidation as the TDF was finishing stage 10 there and we were concerned about road closures and parking. We needn't have been as we easily crossed over the route on main roads and then got extremely lucky in getting a parking spot quite close to the town centre.
Seeing the finish of a stage was not high on my list of priorities but we ended up standing in the crowd about 100m past the finish line and right in front of the presentation area. The crowds were dense but we got a good view of the screens showing the last 30km or so and then saw all the presentations. It was all woth the exercise in the end.
We had dinner in the old town, I had a large bowl of mussels with chips and salad and the others savoury crepes, both of which are specialities of the area. Sweet crepes with various fillings were served for desert.
We travelled home via Cancale, a coastal town famous for its oysters, and then down to Dol de Bretagne. We drove up Mont Dol, and got a distant view of Mont St Michel but a great view of the french countryside with its farm buildings, small towns, corn and wheat crops, etc.
Eventually home at about 10.30 and a frustrating hour or 2 trying to get this done and photos posted. I know some of you missed the photos from my last post but I'll try and get a couple to you this time - believe me it's not easy at the moment.
Weather still great although a little cooler than down south both during the day and at night but that'not such a bad thing.
See you next time.
ps. Thanks again for the messages, it's great to hear from you, but with the difficulties I'm having with the internet, I'm not able to reply to you all individually.
See you next time.
