Despite this being a rest day, I still awoke at my now-usual 5:00 am. At 7:00 am, I went to Smitty's restaurant next door for breakfast (ham and cheese omelet, hash browns, waffle with berries, orange juice and coffee) with Harry and Michael, and we were soon joined by Jim, Brian and Chad.
My father-in-law then drove in from Gimli and took me to Woodcock Cycle Works in Winnipeg (excellent bike store!) to have my bicycle's chain replaced (chains usually last up to 5,000 km, but I have been using mine heavily and I may not find another bicycle store that services Campagnolo components before getting to Toronto). We then went to Mountain Equipment Coop to get a replacement set of tyres (they will likely be needed within the next 2,000 km) and an assortment of other odds and ends.
We then went to my brother-in-law's for lunch and a lovely relaxing afternoon. Thanks, Henry, Ron and Wendy, I very much appreciate your help and hospitality.
Tomorrow we will be leaving the Prairies and entering the Canadian Shield, so the terrain should become much more varied. As much as we have enjoyed riding on flat roads, we are all looking forward to some new scenery. Unfortunately, the forecast is for rain in the morning, which could make the start of the 158 km ride to West Hawk Lake a challenge.
Weather: Sunny with cloudy periods and hot. Showers in spots.
