Route 66 and The Pacific Coast Highway travel blog

The coast gets rocky, again.

Away from the campground later than usual as I had to go to Safeway and buy a Verizon Refill Card for the WIFI. We are due to put time on Sunday. Also stopped at Trader Joe's, filled up with gas and got a truck wash. Headed north on US 101. At Petaluma we headed to the coast and picked up US 1 – PCH, at Bodega Bay. We had been debating for a number of days about 101 or 1 and we made the wrong decision. PCH was winding, steep, high off the water in places, lots of sharp 15 MPH switchbacks and narrow. Marilyn was not impressed. Just the kind of road we avoided in Big Sur. Trouble is once you are committed there is no way to get back to 101 that is not worse than the PCH. Lunch at Fort Ross and the road calmed down. Straighter, flatter and not so steep or high above the water. Easy drive to Manchester beach KOA where we are staying for the weekend. Decided to head back inland at Fort Bragg and pick up the 101 for the rest of the trip north. The drive to get to the 101 could be tricky in spots. We'll see. After dinner went to the community campfire and had ice cream cones. Then home to bed.
