old native carving of bear at Mission Santa Barbara

4/23 – I spoke too soon when I praised the idyllic quiet of my final campground. I forgot about the Roaring Camp rail line running tourists through the redwoods – tooot tooot ta toot – and the motorcyclists letting out their inner Hells Angel on the winding roads – RRHHUUUMMM! I took a vacation from my vacation today and just enjoyed the woods and played house in Quo Vadis. After the fifteen minutes it took me to clean house I hiked into Felton to mail postcards and, oh yeah, get an ice cream cone. Rite Aid’s mocha almond fudge does not measure up to Pinkberry’s salted caramel yogurt but it hit the spot out here in the wilderness. To top off my last night of the trip I plan a campfire followed by the final installments of BBC’s Middlemarch, a salute to both trip purposes, nature and history. (Twenty-five years of teaching taught me to fit just about anything into the stated goals!)
