Lunch Rest Stop

Near West Wendover

West Wendover

Had a nice breakfast of bagels, lox and cream cheese with mixed fruit on the side at Leslie’s. That is not our usual breakfast fare.

Left Truckee a little after 9:00 on a crisp, clear morning. Today we are driving across all of Nevada on Hwy 80 to West Wendover which borders Utah. We’ve done this trip several times and know that a book on tape is the best way to spend driving 430 miles of really barren terrain. We saw lots of tumbleweed, 3 prisons and lots of mineral processing plants. Our friend the wind is back which always gives me a little thrill! Had salads I made in a rest stop on 80. Too cool to eat outside. As we approached Elko we looked out on snow capped peaks in the distance and near West Wendover we saw miles of salt flats.

Arrived at the West Wendover KOA around 5:00 which is now 6:00 as we moved to Mountain time. We are overlooking the salt flats with more snow capped mountains in the distance. Nice! Camp is clean but does not have too much character. Sparsely populated too. This is our first night staying in the rig. I broke my ankle 6 weeks ago and fortunately got the cast off before we left but still have this unwieldy boot that is NOT conducive to the rig or camping. I have at least another week to go with the boot but put on the laced ankle brace and shoe. Much better! We took a walk to the “strip” and back. Nothing too interesting but good to stretch our legs.

Dinner tonight is Costco Tikka Masala with garlic naan bread. We’ll let you know how it is! 2001 Brother Timothy cabernet. Now that is a combination!

Tomorrow we have a short 150 mile ride to Heber City UT where Bob’s cousin Mark and wife Eileen live. Oddly enough, other good friends (Atwood-Cooper) from Sonoma have a place in the same community. We’ll spend a few days visiting.
