BACKGROUND

Here is an excerpt from the Lonely Planet - USA chapter ‘California Deserts’:

You may do two double takes in Cabazon, 17 miles’ drive west of Palm Springs: the first when you see a giant T-Rex & Apatosaurus north of the I-10 freeway, and the second when you see how they are being marketed.

Claude K Bell, a sculptor for Knott’s Berry Farm in Orange County, spent 1964 to 1975 creating these concrete behemoths (55ft and 45fy tall respectively). They remained a temple of tourist kitsch until 2005, when they were purchased by a group of creation scientists, who contend that God created the original dinosaurs on the sixth day of Creation along with the other animals.

In the gift shop in the Bronto belly, alongside the sort of dino-swag you might find at other science museums, you can read about hoaxes and fallacies of evolution and Darwinism, biblical quotes purporting to refer to dinosaurs and evidence that dinosaurs and man existed at the same time.

KAPOORS ON THE ROAD

We spent another terrific week with Audrey at her new home in Mesa. This time the weather was delightful (it had been unusually cold in January). After thanking Audrey for storing our car in her garage, we set off for Los Angeles, taking a route we had never driven before on our previous trips to the southwest.

We had thought we would stop in Palm Springs for lunch and a little drive-through peek at the city, but a huge windstorm sprang up just as we were nearing the turn-off. It was unlikely we would see much with all that sand blowing around, in fact all we could see was the immense forest of wind turbines filling the floor of the narrow valley almost completely.

We carried on and stopped under the massive dinosaurs further along the highway. The storm had passed and after walking around and taking some photos, we had lunch in the little diner in Cabazon. It was like stepping onto a movie set for ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’, except that or hostess looked nothing like Jessica Lange.
