Jo-Ann and Don's RV Travels Southern and Southwest USA. travel blog

We drove from Tulare in the valley to Bakersfield. Stopped in at Buck Owens Resto Bar around 11Am. Restaurant not open but they let us walk around inside unaccompanied. It's like a museum to the late country singer. life size statues of his friends in the lobby. Elvis, hank Williams.Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, were all there for the moment. Large place seating over 600. Many big names still do concerts there. Hundreds of photos of country singers , movie stars and politicians . Great Bar.

We then headed east and north across the Sierra Nevada mountains into the Mojave Dessert. Great scenery. Good highway with exits built in for future roads to nowhere. Completely surrounded by mountain about 10 miles away and dessert shrubs and rock everywhere but very colourful, Reds, browns ,and hundreds of shades of grey,

Stopped in small town of Inyokern. Several shops filled with antiques and junk. only open on weekends but window shopping is great and cheap. potentially very expensive place. Several more miles across dessert highway we arrive in Ridgecrest. A thriving town of 20,000 in the middle of the dessert. 75% white middle class Americans. There is a forces training centre here for navy flyers. Very hot here in summer but now it is like our summer 25-30 during the day and 15-20 at night. Very pleasant

Off to Death Valley tomorrow. Probably no internet or phone service.

back to civilization soon
