Julie's Trip South travel blog

Im in heaven! I made my way to Playa Tamarindo in Costa Rica, and here i am staying! Its so nice! I mean, yeah, it is touristy like everyone said, but i think its just what i needed...some comforts of home! I got here yesterday morning and checked into a hostel...for the first time on this trip im sharing a dorm room, but the hostel is so clean and big and nice that i dont mind, and its $10 a night. Wandered around a bit yesterday to get my bearings...beaches are beautiful, town has lots of travel agencies for setting up trips and to buy souveneirs. I found a bookstore and traded in my crappy book (hanibal..it was the only thing i could find!) for a book about climbing mount everest (thank nat for this obsession...its the 3rd book ive read about it) and another book about mayans in guatemala. Sat down on the beach to read and met 2 teachers from new york...Dwayne and Matt...they are really nice, my age, down here just bumming around...they come down every year to nicaragua with students to build houses...anyways, so we hung out and had some beers on the beach, and then they took me around town since they've been here before...we went to some hotel that had a swim up bar and a waterfall that you could dive off of...im getting so spoiled now! Had some drinks at the bar, went out for dinner...it was a perfect evening!

Today i went on a boat tour of the estuary here...there was an older guy on my trip with me...here with his family, really nice, and obviously really wealthy (they rented a land cruiser, staying at the nicest hotel, brought their teenage kids and 2 friends down with them) so we chatted, and i got to telling him about guatemala and margot and fernando and the flood, and he's going to donate some money to them...really a nice offer. We were on the boat like 2 hours, saw crocodiles, walked into the swamps and saw tons of howler monkeys, and the beaches were covered with bright orange crabs. It was a nice little trip. So this afternoon im taking surf lessons! Yeah, me, surf lessons! Ive never done it before and figured i should try it at least once, so this will be it. Should be fun...im sure ill spend most of my time doing face plants, but the waves are really small so good to learn on. Tomorrow im going on a catamaran cruise with matt and dwayne, then i guess thursday i should head back to nicaragua...have to be back in managua for my flight saturday. Cant upload pictures here...computers wont let me, but i have lots of great shots to show yall when i finally do. Im off to the beach to kick back with a book before my surf lesson.
