We have arrived at our next stop, Funchal (Madeira), Portugal. The island of Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 370 miles off the coast of Morocco. For over 100 years tourists have enjoyed its rugged volcanic peaks, beautiful tropical coastline and a climate that's never too hot or cold. Madeira lace and Madeira wine are both still produced here in the Old World tradition.
We decided to take the "Explore Monte" tour. We walked a short walk from the cruise terminal to the Madeira story center where we learned about the history of the island through interactive exhibits. We purchased our cable car tickets on the ship, so all we had to do was walk to the cable car (gondola) station.
Our ride took about 15 minutes for the cars to ascend the 1,837 feet, passing over the old town and through deep ravines to reach the village of Monte. The views were incredible! We enjoyed spending time in the village and exploring the shops before returning to our ship for dinner and relaxation on the deck.
