Great Barrier Reef
Nov 27, 2012
|Well we made it to the Great Barrier Reef off Hamilton Island. Knuckle Reef to be exact. It was a 2.5 hour catamaran ride in rough seas to get to the outer reef. Lots of people with seasickness but not my water babies! They did great. Bella loved snorkeling until she saw 2 really big black fish & then that was it for her. Back on the boat. She did however go back on the water slide they had on the platform many times. It shoots you out into the "deep blue sea" as Bella says. Phillip had a great time also. We snorkeled out so far they sent the boat to tell us to turn around:-) just trying to get away from the crowd, haha. I prob won't be able to attach Picts b/c we used an underwater camera. Just have to wait until we get back.
Ok kids some fun facts: did you know?
1. The Great Barrier Reef is the only living organism that can be seen from space.
2. There are over 1500 types of species of fish that live on the reef. We saw some really big and really colorful ones. Including Nemo.
3. It is nearly 1500 miles long. How far would 1500 miles take you from Tampa?
We have also been learning some Australian words:
G'day mate= hello
Sun baking=sun bathing
No worries= it's ok or no problem
Schoolies= kids finishing high school. Their last year of school
We'll have to think of more later. We are off on another adventure. Of course I need to wake Phillip up now. He is really enjoying "ship-life" ie sleeping in.
Hi friends, the Great Barrier Reef was very pretty. We saw a lot of fish there including Nemo & a zebra fish. I thought the reef was going to be close to the surface of the water but it actually was very deep. The reef is very pretty at night. All the corals light up. We had a good time there. See you soon.
