Today we drove 100-plus miles east from Key West to the mainland, then about 50 miles north to Miami, then another 100-plus miles west across the Everglades to Naples. A very scenic drive in both directions.
The return trip on the Overseas Highway was great and just as remarkable as the trip out. US Route 1 starts at Mile Zero and goes mostly west and a little north, and then hits the mainland at about Mile 125. We went about 50 miles north from there to the outskirts of Miami.
On the outskirts of Miami we made a turn west on the Tamiami Trail so that we could better see the Everglades. The Tamiami Trail was the first road linking east and west Florida, from Tampa to Miami. We stopped at a visitors center where they have a deck overlooking the roadside canal, the better to see gators and other wildlife.
Naples is just an overnight stop on the way. It is a very popular snowbird area and I have heard some retirees complain that it is too crowded. We saw some very quiet 6 and 8 lane state routes, so I guess we are still offseason!
This day was about 260 miles and there is still 180 miles to go to get to Tampa.
