We drove the 112 miles to Elk City in pouring rain. There was a discussion on whether we were driving across the plains, range , or prairie. All this talk was to distract us from what was happening with all the instrument panels. Fuel was being calculated, the temperature of engine oil, weather reports, a destination was being displayed, it was too much information and then the phone rang after being synced up. I had to have 2 snickers bars and some peanut butter pretzels to relax.
The park is small with lots of red mud. The office was closed because they work 8-9:30am and 3-6:00 pm. While driving there was a small billboard advertising this park that said storm shelters were available. Remember the wizard of oz when they went into the cellar , well I'm putting my red shoes on first and bringing a monkey. There's a sauna in the building with the laundry.
We ventured downtown which is part of old route 66. There is an oil rig #114. Not just the pump an entire derrick Kentucky Fried Chicken was what we sought but there was a sign on the door saying they didn't have enough help today to open the dining room only the drive through.. Except the truck is too big to use the drive though.
No mashed potatoes for me.
Tomorrow we will visit the Route 66 museum.
