The Story of El Capitan

After leaving the Mariposa Grove, we drove down into the valley to see the huge rock formations of El Capitan and Half Dome. . We drove past Bridalveil Falls in hopes of getting better pictures of Yosemite Falls but it was not to be. They've turned off Yosemite Falls for the summer! Actually, the flow naturally stops sometime in June so we did miss it. Yosemite Falls, the highest waterfall in North America, is actually made up of three separate falls: Upper Yosemite Fall (1,430 feet), the middle cascades (675 feet), and Lower Yosemite Fall (320 feet). Very disappointed that we missed it!

Also stopped to get our National Parks books stamped but the visitor's center was closed so we struck out there, too. Bunk and Brenda will get them stamped at another one on their way to Reno.

Long, long, twisty drive out of the park and home. We were going to cook dinner over a campfire but we knew it was going to be too late so we stopped for dinner at the Black Bear Diner in Merced. Very good food! Did have the campfire though and the smoke very graciously went straight up so I could sit out and enjoy it. Nellie liked being out with us on her long leash, too. She doesn't usually go out at night but that night she was allowed out to stalk all the night critters. She got to be a "tiger" for a night, LOL.

Bunk and Brenda and I went to find some of the geocaches in the park this morning then they packed up and left for Reno. We'll meet them up there when the truck's brakes are done.

Picked up the truck today, got my geocache-of-the-day, and stopped for more mussels (they are soooo good!) on the way home. We'll leave for the Reno vicinity tomorrow. We were going to stop for an overnight on the way up but Brenda must be back to Vegas on Wednesday and we want to do a trip to Virginia City so we'll drive on through. It's not all that long a drive, just longer than the 2 or 3 hours we usually do.
