Passport America Rally in Lousiana travel blog

After leaving HWH in Moscow, Iowa yesterday we drove to Des Moines, Iowa and arrived there around 1400. Our friends in Ames drove to the campground and we visited for a while and then we went to dinner and they treated us to a great Mexican dinner. After dinner we returned to the motorhome and had some ice cream for dessert and visited again for an hour or so when our friends left and returned to their home in Ames.

We got an early start today and left Des Moines at 0630. It was raining very slightly and unfortunately for the mid-westerners the rain did not last and by the time we crossed into Nebraska the sun was bright and the skies were clear. Traffic was light to moderate at times and there are a great number of construction projects along I80 in Iowa and Nebraska. None the construction projects caused any serious delays.

The devastation caused by the mid-wests drought is apparent all along the highway in Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. Corn that should be six feet high or higher is stunted and the ears of corn in the stores are small and are not as fully developed as they should be.

We drove to North Platte, Nebraska today and it was the second longest single day drive we have made on this trip. The total miles was 403 miles, in 6 hours and 32 minutes, with an average speed of 61.9 mph.

Presently we are watching the Olympics water polo game and writing the Journal at the same time. The temperature in North Platte is 100 degrees but thankfully the humidity is only 28 percent. We have both a/c units going full blast and the temperature inside the rig is still 85. The wind has piked up and we are hoping that the temperature will drop significantly once the sun goes down.

That is all for now,

Ross & Marge
