First of all, a couple of nights ago we went to a ‘friends & family of Australian basketball’ function in a pub in London somewhere. It was for both the boomers and opals but no players attended. It was a nice idea and good crowd. Hilarious when one of the boys fell completely asleep in the window leaning up against a blow up kangaroo. Just about everyone took a photo and I suspect it may be on Facebook by this stage.
Someone had the bright idea of writing name badges for everyone to help the meet and greet, however they decided to put what your connection to basketball was which turned it into a bit of a hierarchy situation. Let’s put it this way, the girl who was doing it identified herself as one of the boomers gf, if that gives you the picture.
Anyway we were there with Robyn who was probably the only Opal in the room, but I said to Stevie what are you going to get on your nametag and she very clearly said ‘Tom Maher’s daughter’. All good but the stupid bf decides to make a commentary because he is coaching another team and puts ! on Stevie’s badge. Never mind that both he and Rob have been instrumental in the development of basketball in Australia for over 30 years and he coached the Opals to their first ever bronze and silver medals. I think she probably got a shock when she turned to me and got a bitch brow. I just told her to write Tom Maher’s sister on mine, and by this time Robyn had arrived and told her to write ‘Tom Maher’s wife”. However the gf realised that meant she knew who Robbie was, and wrote ‘Legend’ on her badge instead – so the gf redeemed herself somewhat.
So, the basketball *huge sigh*. Put it this way, after the Opals performance against France yesterday afternoon Timmsy met up with us before the GB game in the evening and Margarita’s were involved!
GB is very disappointed to lose against Canada but they did play well. I suspect everyone is still impressed with them because they are competitive which I don’t think anyone expected really. Going to be tough for them to make the quarterfinals now tho’. Robyn has reviewed the rest of the rounds and GB will need to win 2 of their next 3 matches and Brazil needs to beat Russia (or something like that).
Catching up with Tom and Timmsy for dinner tonight
