Cascades!

Ponderosa

Cyclist at mtn pass

Rails to Trails

Lined with fruit trees and vines

July 26,  2012

We left the campground hoping we did not have any hitchhikers on board, like the mouse John found when opening the gas cover after leaving Dinosaur National.  Poor little guy had ridden about 90 miles under the car until he found a safe, comfy seat by the gas lid. He must have gotten off that night because we never saw him again.

We stopped for wifi in Prineville to upload photos.  Most rural cell signals just won't handle photos.

The Cascades!  First view lets us know we are almost there!

Wow, the ponderosa forest is beautiful on the Old McKenzie road from Sisters to Eugene (we just made the vehicle limit of 35 feet total).  While looking at Mt. Washington near the pass, we stumbled onto a lava flow!  1500 years old, looking fresh as yesterday.  And then, the lushness of the fir and cedar on the western side of the mountains!

Parked in Schwartz Park outside Cottage Grove and jumped on the bikes for a short ride to town and back on a REAL bike trail!  Used to be a railroad, so they call them Rails to Trails.  As you can see, I had trouble getting John on down the trail because of the apple, pear, plum trees and blackberries.  He would still be there if they were ripe.  LOL

We will leave here for our tour from Eugene on Sunday.  Sorry hot folks, but it is cool enough that I didn't even break a sweat at 5pm on 16 mile ride.
