Monument at the Cemetery

Information overload today. We started at the visitor center with the movie giving a summary of the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg. After the movie, there is a presentation of the cyclorama of the Battle. The painting is impressive with all the attention to details and the presentation with the sound effects puts you right in the middle. From there you can enter the museum which was far bigger than I thought. We had packed sandwiches so we ate on the picnic tables outside and the heat wasn’t too bad in the shade. We opted for the private tour guide that drives your car around while providing details. He was very good about including details of the contributions of Wisconsin regiments and the impact they had on the Battle. We didn’t get out of the car as much since it was so warm and then rained on our 2 ½ hour tour. His description of how Little Round Top was saved was really descriptive and detailed. After the tour, we drove back around the tour and took pictures and climbed the lookout towers. Our last stop was at the cemetery. We all learned a lot today.

We ate dinner in the tavern at the Dobbin House which is actually in the basement. When we came up, it was pouring rain and storming outside. The girls went swimming when we got back to the hotel.
