Courthouse Rock & others

Campsite in Gering, NE

Today started even earlier than yesterday, but only by about 30 min. We left Seibert, CO about 8:30. Drove over to Burlington, CO to fill up with gas because the GPS indicated there was a Shell station there, NOT!!!, so we had to gas up at CONOCO at $3.60/gal. After recovering from the shock, we completed the sell then made our way cross country to Sidney, NE where we stopped for lunch and, of course, a brief walk around Walmart. Back in “G/G” we again drove through the country side and back roads on the way to Gering, NE. On the way through the hundreds of acres of wheat and corn country, we witnessed a crop duster at work and saw a deer cross the road at mid morning instead of the usual time of early evening.

We stopped at Chimney Rock National Historical Site. Chimney Rock, on the Oregon-California Trail, was used as a landmark during the early migration west. According to the information, the earliest mention, by settlers, was in the early 1800s. It is a rock formation about ½ mile around the bottom with another formation resembling a chimney on top (kind of like an upside down funnel) standing about 300 feet, but apparently due to wind and rain, it is slowly shrinking. It is still an impressive sight since it is just standing there by itself. After a brief visit, we ventured on to Gering to the campground.

We are parked in a very nice place with the sun on the street side of “G/G”. It is still very warm, but there is a slight breeze outside and that is where this is being written. The RV site is a concrete pad with a patio, picnic table, several bushes and some flowers. There is a nice view of Courthouse Rock on one side and Scotts Bluff on the other. The campground is large, but instead of having lots of sites crammed together, there are in a circle with a large grassy area in the middle for kids of all ages to play.

Tomorrow when we leave here we plan to visit Scotts Bluff National Monument, then on into Black Hawk, SD. It will be nice to set up “our house” for a while instead of moving every day. We’re looking forward to visiting all the interesting places around the Rapid City area. Thanks for hanging in with us and let us know if you have any questions or comments.
