Yesterday was busy! We went to the post office to get our mail which was sent to us from Texas. Then we went to the bank and I got a haircut. After taking care of these things, we went to see our friend, Steve Jones. We knew Steve and his wife Jan in Wayne, PA when I worked at the American Baptist national offices and we were members of Central Baptist Church where Steve was the pastor. We didn't see each other very often except at denominational meetings until the last few years. It's been great to have these visits.
Steve and Jan are still working. Jan is a job coach and had to work yesterday. Steve worked in the morning. We met him at Prairie Baptist Church, across the state line in Prairie Village, Kansas. Then Jan met up with us for lunch and dinner. We joked a lot about the ambience of the lunch place. We had a terrific gyros platters sitting at tables in a gas station/convenience store. We may see this as a trend. Who knows!
Jan went back to work and we toured Kansas City. It was great. Steve took us through beautiful neighborhoods with tree lined streets and lots of Tudor homes. We went downtown, to various districts and to a most unusual museum. It's called the Arabia Steamboat Museum. The Arabia was a streamboat that hit a log in the Missouri River just north of KC and sank rapidly. No one died in the tragedy fortunately, but the ship sank with 200 tons of cargo on it. That was in 1856. The ship was found in 1989 in a farmer's field under many feet of soil. (The course of the Missouri changes over time.)
A group of six men who loved the excitement of a treasure hunt excavated the area and removed the cargo. It is a huge collection of all things one needed on America's frontier in the 1850s. Think of a historic Walmart with clothes, medicines, building materials, china place settings, household goods, perfume, pickles and jewelry. Almost everything was perfectly preserved. Even the pickles were edible.
After viewing a film about the project, we met one of the men who was part of the excavation team. We were also able to view the lab they use to restore the items. Only about half of what was recovered has been restored.
After visiting this intriguing museum, we went to Kaufman Gardens and sat where there was a cool breeze. We also walked around the 80 year old Country Club Plaza with its Spanish architecture. It is an outdoor mall with high quality shops, a favorite place to go in Kansas City.
Dinner, ah dinner. We went to a famous upscale barbeque restaurant in Country Club Plaza. Jan joined us and Jerry and I pigged out, so to speak. Jerry and I had no idea when we ordered a full slab of baby back ribs that the serving was at least 1/3 more than what you usually get. I brought home the three sides that were served because I had to concentrate on the best part. Not only was the food great, we were able to spend some time catching up with one another.
After leaving our home on wheels at noon, we arrived back home at 10:30 p.m. Somehow, Holly had no accident. We don't know how she does it. What a dog!
