Saturday 7/7/12 To Florence, via the train

It seemed strange not having Christa with us today, missing her already. We had such a great time with her. She is very comfortable with planning day to day, being flexible with changes and she loves camping..sleeping and sitting on the ground, eating basic food while the ants are climbing all around us, only having a couple of changes of clothes and 2 prs of shoes….she joked that she will appreciate furniture when she gets home. The midday train from Ostia Antica got us to Roma termini about 1.30pm and we took the 3pm train onto Florence. So nice to relax and watch the Tuscan countryside go by, except that the AC in our carriage wasn’t working. Just as we approached Florence we thought it might be a good idea to use Garmin to find a campground. One was 35ks away , too far and the other only 5ks. Garmin lead us on a very zig zagging route through the main centre and towards Piazza Michelangelo, I think pete had set Garmin for the shortest route, so it kept directing us up the hill via steps, so instead we followed nearby ramped walkways or the road. After about 20 mins we came out on top at the Piazza, a large paved area with 360 degree views of the city. A statue of Michalangelo’s David is in the centre. People everywhere and street vendors with their displays of handbags, art etc laid out. Tourbus loads of people . Garmin is showing that the campground is only 1 km away…mmm… Nickie is very doubtful, where could a campground be here??? ..maybe underground???..we haven’t seen any streetsigns for a camp….its 8.30pm already, we are feeling pretty tired and don’t want the hassle of trying to find a hostel. After taking a few photos of the view, down the hill we go and yes!..there it is!.... we get a level tent site under trees, a perfect spot and its a very popular camp, many young travellers. We meet a father and son 12yrs, who have cycled for 2 weeks from their home in Germany and on their way to Rome…lots of hills and heat. The father was riding a recumbent bike, and we wonder what it is like to do hills lying down !!. Another noisy night of music coming from different directions, earplugs work well.
