Duman Kasapligil Trip Of A Lifetime travel blog

Today, we left our Airbnb hosts Norman and McCordia and their adorable and well-behaved Jack Russell, Isis, and headed for the road. Our destination was Port Junction New Jersey, the home of my friend Nicole. Once upon a time, Nicole was a dynamic journalist, age 25, who had made her way West after NYU to take a job as an intern at the SF Bay Guardian. I hired her as a staff writer at the Monterey alt paper, Coast Weekly, where she proved her mettle over and over as a hard-working reporter and wonderful writer. Of course, we couldn't keep her, and after watching a few weeks of Spanish language television, she went off to take a job in Mexico. Years later, after a few years working for Reuters in Haiti, Nicole returned home to the U.S. and continued a brilliant career in financial journalism. I attended her wedding in September 2003, with my 7-year-old daughter in tow and my 4-year-old son at home. Now, it was my time to visit Nicole's 7-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, and it was wondrous to see how the circle of life continues to turn.

Nicole's home is amidst a lush, green part, appreciated by all of us Californians familiar with green winters, and brown summers. Nicole graciously provided us all with a kid-friendly food and beds in the midst of a torrential downpour and a husband away at work til the wee hours. I loved seeing Nicole, Doug and their kids, and I left with an impression of a woman happily balancing career passions with a growing family.
