Usually, when I mention that I have done something for the first time, it means I get to cross another item off my Bucket List. However, this time, it is because I royally screwed up! We were enjoying our evening last night as usual: John had gone to bed, and I was on the computer catching up on the news, journals, etc. There was an email from one of my favorite people, Gordon, that said, "Where the heck are you guys?" I thought, boy, he must be anxious to see us. I was trying to think of some smart ass comeback to his question but the rest of his email said that we were supposed to have been in Port Orford on Monday, July 2nd. Say what???

--

I have always been the Navigator: consulting maps and campground directories, researching campground reviews, planning routes and distances, and making reservations as needed. Many months ago, we had planned on being in Port Orford for the 4th of July holiday, not only because we would get to bug Gordon and Juanita for a week, but because we like to be in a small town on major holidays to avoid big crowds. Plus, we like Port Orford and Tim and Cindy's excellent RV park. So, as I always try to do, I called and made reservations for the 4th of July week and I marked it diligently on my calendar that I keep with my travel notes . . . and promptly forgot about it.

This spring and summer, as we have traveled through Nevada, California and into Oregon, we have been on a weekly schedule that involves travel on Tuesdays - no rhyme or reason - it's just the way it has worked out. So, I ASSUMED that our reservations in Port Orford began on Tuesday, July 3rd. WRONG! I felt horrible. How could I screw up such an important reservation as the 4th of July??? Where would we go if for some reason they didn't hold our spot for us, I mean, with the holiday, all of the parks would be booked. I was panicking and the more I thought about it, the more upset I got.

--

After a while I calmed down and managed to tell John about my screw up and in his usual, calm and collected manner (thank you, sweetie), he said, no biggie. We would figure something out. It was too late to call Port Orford.

So, this morning, we were up and at 'em early, hoping to get to Port Orford when Cindy was just opening the office. It was a gorgeous sunny morning in Brookings. We said goodbye to our beautiful beach spot, promising to return another day. It had been perfect up until last weekend when all the campers came in. Traffic was so bad out front on Sunday, that cars were waiting for a parking space. When we do come back, it will be before July.

Port Orford is only about 50 miles north of Brookings, so it was an easy drive with spectacular ocean views along the way. A few miles north of Brookings, we hit drizzly fog but by the time we got into Port Orford, the sun was making an appearance. When we pulled into the driveway at the Port Orford RV Village, we saw Cindy walking towards the office. She put her hands on her hips and started shaking her finger at us, as if to scold us. These park owners have to be the best we have ever encountered. Although it has been four years since we were here last, we were greeted as if we were family. And of course, she had held our spot for us. Whew!

As John was backing into our spot for the next week, under my expert direction, I heard Gordon's voice already giving me a ration of bull about the job I was doing. I love it! He is among the best at poking fun and what's even better is that he can take it too. I look forward to a week of razzing.

After we settled in, we went out for some fish tacos with Gordon and Juanita. We never get tired of swapping stories with these two. It is because of them and Gordon's journal that we got up the nerve to go full timing when we did.

There are lots of local activities planned for the holiday in town and other activities here at the park during the week. This pretty park shows the pride of ownership and Cindy and Tim have done a lot of work to make it comfortable and homey. We are excited to be back.
