Visited Fort Yellowstone - established at Mammoth Springs by 1886, appoximately a decade after the Park was established. Company M, First U.S. Calvary Fort Custer, Montana Territory, arrived to protect and defend the wildlife and natural resources from poachers & pirates. Initially, the soldiers resided in temporary, frame buildings. After five years, the Army realized this would not be a temporary assignment. In 1891, Congress appropriated $50,000. for a permanent post. The National Park Service took over in 1916 briefly. Due to local resistance, the Army resumed control until 1918, when the Park was fully under the control of the NPS. Great historical accounts here of life during the late 1800's and early 1900's as a soldier.

Walked a short distance to view the hot springs and mud pots then headed back to camp via

Roosevelt Camp & Tower Falls. Roosevelt Camp is located at the site of the first hotel in this area opened in 1884 and built near the area President Theodore Roosevelt camped on his first visit to the area prior to it bcomng our first National Park. Further down the long and winding road we came across Tower Falls, made famous by painter, Thomas Moran. Not far from the Tower, Wayne spotted a coyote in the scrub and I was able to snap a photo of him. On the last leg of the journey we crossed Mt. Washburn at an elevation of 8859 ft. with a view of the canyons we visited the day before.
