Peter & Nickie's 2012 European Bike Trip travel blog

Wednesday 13/6/12 Cesme to Chios,Greece

Pete finds another hole in the tyre tube, probably from that same thorn! Erdil helps us book ferry tickets for 7pm tonight. We have a relaxing day swimming in the Marina, we have a salad lunch at a waterfront restaurant, enjoy a beer and biscuits in a shady park while writing postcards home. We do a short cycle up and down the tourist shops and speak awhile with a shopowner who says business is very slow, few foreigners this year, more turks visiting but they have no money to spend. Nickie goes to buy water at a market and quicker than lightning the guy pins a good luck charm to her top!! Nice gesture but a bit close for comfort! We hear the call to prayer for the last time and we really enjoy a plate of hot chips and an omelette while we google info about Chios at a café. 7pm we leave Turkey, Asia and within the hour arrive in Chios, Europe. There is a sadness in leaving Turkey, the people are so special, friendly, welcoming and happy to have us there. There is no problem through customs, the guards look at our bikes and gear, and realise the hassle it would be to take things apart to go through xray. Chios port looks beautiful in the sunset. We decide we will stay a day or 2 and head to a café for coffee to search lonely planet for accommodation. It is quite dark by the time we find Chios Rooms on the waterfront. To avoid the traffic we had walked on the footpath and didn’t see the sign which was hidden by the awning of the café below. What a relief to be welcomed by Don, a kiwi who has lived here for 30 yrs, who runs this quirky and beautiful old guest house. The building is 120yrs old and the ceilings are 4.5m high.
