This river cruise was a highlight of our first caravan!
May 28 – On the Rhine River
We had a beautiful day to take a river cruise on the Middle Rhine [Rhein] River from Rudesheim to St. Goar. Vineyards populate the steep hills on both sides of the swift current that often hides shallows and rocks. There are 21 castles and historic ruins along here but only 2 fortresses have remained in tact. The best know ruin is the Werner Chapel in Bacharach. Nowhere else in the world are there more castles located in a similar size area than here.
After 2 ½ hr. we disembarked in the castle town of St. Goar where we rode a small train UP to the castle ruins for the view of the river and town, then rode it back down to town. Ivan and I went our separate ways to explore and take photos. Lots of cafes and restaurants, a couple of bakeries and gelato shops amongst the souvenir and clothing stores; pretty typical.
12:20 we boarded a paddle wheeler for the return to Rudesheim. We shared a light beer and a tasty plate of 5 sausages over delicious sauerkraut for lunch on the boat.
We walked past 3 long river cruise boats on our way back to camp. Pretty sure we'll be through this area again on a river boat!
At 4:00 the fun ended and the work of packing up and cleaning the rigs began. Dieter took out their kitchen items and towels. We vacuumed, scrubbed the toilet and sinks, dusted, etc. to get the rig ready to return tomorrow. Our reward was a pizza feed at which Ivan and I finished our last bottle of the delicious Mosel sweet Riesling we'd bought May 4th in Punderich. After that we finished packing up as much as possible for the night.
