Peter & Nickie's 2012 European Bike Trip travel blog

Friday 8/6/12 to Antalya by bus, 40ks on bikes

Woke to a lovely sunrise. Pete has trouble with fuel blockage in the stove, so no coffee! On the road at 7.15, our quickest packup. Cover the 13 ks into Manavgat city in 20mins! And stop at the first café. It happens that no buses can take us and bikes to Denizli til Monday, weekend buses are full already, so we take the 10am bus to Antalya, maybe we can see Mt Olimpos. Rugged mountains appear. Anyalya is a sprawling city along the coastline, very clean and tidy, topiary trees and colourful flowers in the median strips. Even saw 2 guys polishing the reflectors on the median barriers!! No rubbish on the streets here. Huge Outlet stores for “leathers and furs” jewellery and fashion, mega home furnishing stores. We buy bus tickets to Denizli for Monday at 9.30, and will ride the 20ks to Pammukale. We have a thrilling/hair raising 20 min ride from the Otogar to the beachfont, dealing with massive roundabouts, traffic lights, many lanes of city traffic going so fast!! As we hadn’t planned to be in this city we don’t know where the camping spots are. At a beachfront café we sit a few hours using power to charge the computer and phone. The young waiters don’t seem impressed that we only buy an orange juice and an icecream each. The computer goes flat and we realise they probably turned off the power to us after a short while!! 4:30 time to find a place to sleep, no-one we ask knows about camping, so we head west round the coast for about 10ks, maybe we can camp on the beach. Nickie getting pretty tired by now so she is very happy to see Deinzer camping and restaurant. As soon as we ride in, we know its going to be an interesting place..see the photos. 25 lira (about 17NZ) no other campers..mmm at least it will be quiet. Our host greets us, seems an OK guy. There are a few young people having restaurant meals alongside the stream. The toilets and showers are filthy, its OK for 1 night. We managed to get some lettuce at a market to have with our usual tomato and bread sandwiches and eat at the stream watching very noisy frogs on the waters edge. After tea we sit and work on the blog awhile, with intentions of an early getaway.
