Good morning from Kentucky! Sitting looking from where we came, the sun is in my eyes so I am looking east; on beautiful KOA Lane near Argillite, Kentucky. Cindy’s across the table playing Words with Friends with her sister Penny, and John C is lounging in his chair. We started out Thursday with great plans and organization to get on the road by 9 or 10, we pulled out at 11:15 Just on time. 1st stop – an ATM machine for some traveling cash, 2nd stop Sam’s Club Hagerstown, MD to top off the fuel tank and get some food for our bellies. We arrived at our current location about 8:30 PM after having some delays along the way;
We are towing Cindy’s car (Toad) attached and maintained with all kind of cables, safety chains wires and a “brake buddy”. The brake buddy is like having a fake person sitting in the driver’s seat of Toad pushing on its brake pedal when the RV (Lucy) slows down to help the whole system (Lucy & Toad) slow down. It all works on inertia of the vehicles slowing down and a weight moving forward, activating electrically the braking of Toad. Sometimes it all does not work in the proper sequence as we found out again coming down one of those Allegheny Mountains in Western Maryland. I needed to slow down, pushed on Lucy’s brakes and Toad must have panicked, her wheels completely locked up, blue smoke streaming off the tires skidding down the highway and the tires are screaming like a NASCAR race. Cindy is asking “what’s going on”, well needless to say; I’m a bit busy trying to keep us lined up and running straight and was able to get us off the road. We corrected the problem (rebooted the system) and do not expect any more “braking” issues on this trip.
Later Cindy wanted to drive so I took the opportunity to take a nap. She drove through the city traffic around Charleston, West Virginia via I-70 to I-68 to I-79 and finally I-64. At that point we came to a standstill and were delayed about 1 hour due to a couple trucks getting tangled and blocking the roadway. There are benefits to driving an RV – during the delay Cindy was able to get up and switch driver, she had her “dinner” and made snacks – fresh strawberries and chocolate for the driver, very nice. We considered offering bathroom breaks for the cars around us, but could not come up with a fair fee structure - I figured $10.00 for a #1, $5.00 to wash their hands and at no #2’s allowed.
Well today we are heading for Louisville, KY area for an overnight stay, but really staying in Clarksville, Indiana which is right across the river from Louisville. We were hoping to stay in Santa Claus, Indiana tonight, but they had no sites available because of the Memorial Day weekend. This will be a short travel day, and then Saturday we will be on the road to St Louis for the rest of the holiday weekend. Checking the weather forecast for the weekend, it is going to be quite “hot” – in the upper 90’s for our stay in St. Louis. I’m going to check the baseball game to see if the cardinals are playing at home.
