Day 24, Friday, May 18, 2012
We woke up to another 2 or 3 inches of snow on the ground, overcast, and still lightly snowing. After much discussion, we decided to stay put for the day. We had breakfast in the restaurant here. I had the Canada version of eggs benedict with hash browns. Hash browns are really country potatoes, hollandaise sauce is not yellow and I can’t really describe what it was like. Rob was totally bored so after the weather cleared this afternoon we got in the car and drove a smaller road straight north toward Fort Laird. The Milepost book claimed there were bears along there. No luck today. I think it is too cold and too much snow on the ground. It got up to about 43 degrees today. There is a guy staying in a tent next to us. Looks like he’s been there awhile. Crazy.
We’ve been seeing a lot of small RV’s that are all exactly the same with Alaska plates heading north. We assumed they are new units made in the States that are being driven to Alaska for use as rentals. Rob finally asked someone today how it works. This group is about 150 units that all came from Iowa. They pay $750 for the use of the fully stocked RV and pay for their own gas and expenses. They have about 21 to 24 days to get it to Alaska and drop it off. Then they can do what they want to either spend more time there or fly home. The people next to us are taking a cruise after they drop off their RV. Interesting way to go.
