An Irish Welcome
Here's Céad Míle Fáilte to friend and to rover
That's a greeting that's Irish as Irish can be
It means you are welcome
A thousand times over
Wherever you come from, Whosoever you be
The first thing I noticed when I arrived in Dublin, is that all the signs are in both Irish and English. For those of you who didn't know, Irish is a language! Dublin is a much smaller city than London which I love! They are more relaxed, move at a slower pace, and over all friendlier. When I asked the bus driver how to get to Camden Place, he told me to slow down, place my bags to the side, and enjoy the chat. I didn't realize I looked frazzled! It was a welcomed change of pace. I didn't get up to much on my first day other than checking in. I was invited to dinner by the hostel as it's tradition every Wednesday. It was very cool and I was able to meet loads of people from South Africa, France, Denmark, and Canada!
Day two in Dublin started off with a free breakfast which consisted of toast and cold cereal. I decided to go for a walk aimlessly. Much to my delight, it was the best thing I could have done! I found my way to Grafton Street which is a principal shopping street in Dublin's city centre. It's littered with pubs, shops, and buskers. I found myself in front of Trinity College. It was established by Royal Charter in 1592 under Elizabeth I and was closed to Roman Catholics until Catholic Emancipation. The Catholic hierarchy then banned Roman Catholics from attending it until 1970. It is situated in the city centre, on College Green, and has 15,000 students. One of Dublin's newest monuments is the Spire of Dublin, or officially titled "Monument of Light". It is a 121.2 metres (398 ft) conical spire made of stainless steel and is located on O'Connell Street. On my way back to the hostel, I took a wrong turn and ended up at Temple Bar. What I didn't know is that Temple Bar isn't just a pub; it's actually the name of the street. The pub came after. Lastly, I ended up outside of Copper Face Jack's Night Club. This is a club Ronan McDermott told me I had to experience! Luckily for me, it's literally a hop, skip, and jump away from my hostel. According to the locals, if you're out for a laugh - and a guaranteed snog you must try this place.
On a side note, I would recommend the Times Hostel to just about anyone. They offer free activities every day of the week! Tonight is pub crawl night which I'll take full advantage of :)
