Sarah and Bens Round the World Trip 2011 travel blog

So everyone I know it has been a very long wait but here is... Malaysia!

This wasn’t a country that we planned to travel but after reading around we decided to do our diving course there as it was really cheap and the visibility is as good as Thailand but without the crowds.

We first headed to Kuala Lumpur (thought rude not to go to the capital!) we stayed in china town the first day trying to get there from Singapore was a nightmare a 2-3 journey ended up taking us 12 hours!! Grr.

We were the only tourists on the bus and we stuck out like a sore thumb but the driver didn’t think to tell us when the main K.L stop was so we ended up in the outskirts. We waited for a bus to take us into town but when it came the guy said it was ‘broken’ (more like he wanted to finish early) then it was two hours till the next one, which didn’t turn up! God we were going out of our minds... we ended up getting a taxi who charged us way over the odds! Anyways we made it there in the end...

We used K.L to relax as in Singapore and Vietnam we were nonstop. The china town market was amazing the stuff was as good as Thailand but much cheaper. So naturally we spent loads of money and got stuff to prep for Oz! The best thing about K.L was the PETRONAS towers they are so huge and you got a really good view from the city. The tour was also so professionally done unlike the menara tower which was turned into a tacky attraction with pony rides around the car park and simulators.

K.L wasn’t as staggering as Singapore but it was good all the same. The accommodation was pretty skanky though but we managed. Also it was the most humid place we have visited so far. Most nights we feasted on bbq chilli chicken and fresh veg (which was amaze as we haven’t had broccoli or corn on the cob since we had been away! – and we got to cook it ourselves).

One of the greatest parties we have had took place in K.L on St. Paddy’s day. It was like a massive festival the streets were all closed and full of Guinness pints, hats, wigs, glasses! Was crazy time! The bars invested so much money into making it the best party ever!

We dived on tioman island which was just off the east coast of Malaysia, it was such a nice island really small community feel and if you stayed long enough you begun to know the local people. We stayed for about 8 nights in the end because the weather was so nice and we didn’t want to go back to Singapore because it was too expensive to wait for our flight to Australia. After being on the island for a while we started to get a bit bored, it was lovely but not much to do apart from the beach all day and wait for happy hours at the bars. So we needed to choose a place to go for a week or so.

Diving was amazing we got a really good price because it was out of season and we were the only two people on the course, we both really enjoyed diving and after completing the course we thought about doing the advanced diving certificate but decided to save a dive for the Great Barrier Reef.

We left the island and chose to go to a place called Melaka which was on the west coast. Melaka must be one of the most touristic places in Malaysia mainly with Chinese and other Malaysians. It was such a nice town and had a river running through the middle of it. There was so much to do here, sightseeing, more shopping and different markets. You couldn’t walk for 2 mins without seeing a different museum. They had a great night market in Melaka we spent quite a long time with German and a Italian guy testing out the Malaysian snacks and the different teas. Apple tea! Yum yum

We didn’t book any accommodation and when we arrived there were two people offering us different accommodation and I think we chose the right one, we had digital TV, playstation, free breakfast, tea and coffee, a big and clean room and a good location for a really good price, it was quite hard to leave that place.

So it was nearly time to fly to Australia and after travelling all day to Singapore airport we finally made it, only to find out that our flight had been cancelled until the next day, so more waiting around!

Next up OZ :) xxxx
