Lisa's Travels travel blog

Today we didn’t have a tour booked. We figured that we would just do Mykonos on our own (we read that it was easy enough to do). Dad stayed back on the boat and we went out.

We actually got to dock and so we didn’t have to take tenders. The Port offers a free bus transfer to Mykonos town which was very helpful.

We got into Mykonos, how beautiful. The streets are all rock with white around them. The buildings are all white with either a blue, red or green trim. We walked the narrow little streets and did a lot of shopping! It was funny to see trucks going down these tiny little streets, delivering produce and groceries to restaurants and hotels. You could get hit by a motorcycle easily, they just turned corners at whatever speed they were driving the streets down!

We stopped and had a beautiful lunch of Greek Salad, chicken and pork souvlaki, kebab, pita and tzatziki and some wine. The restaurant was one of 4, all located across and beside each other, it was fun to listen to each of the waiters telling you that their restaurant was the best. I think that our choice was great, although I am sure that most of them would be. We asked our waitress what we should do after lunch and she told us to go to the beach, by bus. My being a little more cautious, decided perhaps a bus was not for us (you never know about the schedules of buses here), so we went and talked to a taxi driver who said that she could take us around for an hour for 50 Euro (way cheaper than a tour). So off we went with our taxi driver who was a fantastic Greek woman, born and raised on Mykonos. She took us to a couple of beaches, then by the tavern that they filmed Shirley Valentine, that are is really built up compared to 20 years ago when they filmed it. It gave us quite the giggle to see the spot!!!! We then went to Paradise beach which was beautiful and then the driver took us to her favourite beach, Paranga beach. I think that they got the names mixed up because Paranga beach was definitely paradise.

The water is so breathtaking here, such a deep blue and then aqua near the shores, I don’t think that you would ever get bored staring at it. I could see myself spending some time here.

So Mykonos has not disappointed which really makes us happy considering we didn’t get to go to Santorini.

Sorry, no pictures right now, the internet on the ship is really expensive, so I am camping on someone on Mykonos' WIFI from the ship and it is a little bit slow...but free!!!!
