Hello all,
Karekare beach, if you've seen the film The Piano then you know where we were and how beautiful this place is. (seriously pic soon). Perfect for a stroll and fresh air in the lungs after tea and toast Ala-Oxley from the van.
A bit of drama here when a freak wave came in and we had to run for it (it was chilly so we were wrapped up) we found ourselves trapped between a river and the advancing sea, and it never stopped it just came and came. Anyway after making like crabs we made a sideways escape and looked on in disbelief, we waited for nearly another hour but no repeat performance.
That night we stayed on a free campsite nearby, roughing it again. Some shady bloke offered us showers and a cup of tea in exchange for keeping an eye on his truck for the night. All seemed okay until the morning when he came back to his van and showed me the speakers in the back and explained that his job was running a website for "the oldest profession" and advertised his site by driving around Auckland playing seedy music and a jingle. Apparently it's legal here. In the daylight I could see he had a been involved in the odd altercation in his life and couple with his "eviction" story we decided to decline his kind offer from the previous night and sped off.
