Tupelo/Bald Cypress swamp near the Pearl River

Two snappers and a turtle sharing space

Fri 5/11

Moving day! We enjoyed Vicksburg and seeing most of what was related to the Battles and the Siege but it is time to move on.

We left Vicksburg, headed east on I-20 and got back on the Trace at the point near Clinton where we exited yesterday. We drove north, stopping and visiting all of the points of interest (POIs) along the way. We utilized one of the many picnic areas on the Trace to made a sandwich.

At the Bald Cypress/Tupelo Swamp (cool place - MM 122), we walked the trail around the swamp seeing one turtle and two snappers (gators) on one log. The next place to stop for an overnight was some distance up the road, so around mid-afternoon we stopped at Ratliff Ferry Campground on the Pearl River, where the River enters the north end of Ross Barnett Reservoir (50 square mile body of water). This is an okay campground for a night. You know the type – an old fishing camp with marginal 30 amp power, etc. We did meet two very nice couples from MS who were tenting for the weekend. We have never heard so many different types of frogs, crickets, birds and who knows what that night! They sang, chirped and croaked well into the night. It did rain some overnight but not hard. We traveled 75 miles today with 10.7 mpg.
