The factory building

They use this modified 747 to ship parts from other subcontractors

Planes in varying degrees of completion

Look at all these switches and lights!

Today was a drive a little; see a lot kind of day. We left the campground in Bellingham for the less than an hour trip south on I-5 to WA 20 and west to Anacortes, which is pretty much where we were yesterday. Except yesterday, we were bus less. We are in a pretty nice campground on the Samish Indian Reservation with one minor problem. We can’t leave here tomorrow to sightsee between 7am and 5pm because they are repaving the entrance and the road will be closed. So I guess if we get up early enough we will leave, if not we will find something to keep us busy. The scenery around the park is nice, except for the 2 oil refineries across the bay, but if you look the right direction though, it really is nice.

We set up camp here by 11:00, then within 30 minutes we were back on the road heading toward Everett to tour the Boeing factory – well, one of the factories. The one in Everett is where they make the 747, 777 and the 787. The tour is not really all that extensive; it makes a stop at all 3 production lines for about 10 minutes each and they explain a little about the process and the differences in the 3 types of planes and how they are made. But, they don’t allow pictures during the tour which kind of sucks. It was pretty cool to see them in production and the dozens of shiny, completed planes on the flightline but it was not as extensive a tour as the Hoover Dam.

One interesting part of the tour is that the factory is the biggest building in the world by volume. You could fit 75 regulation football fields under the roof or 911 basketball courts. Bet you didn’t know that did you? See, I paid attention during the tour. It lasted about 90 minutes, then we wandered through the Boeing gift shop and then went out to the viewing deck to take a few pictures, then it was back on the road to the campground. We got back about 6:00, ate almost everything we could find, then went for a long dog walk on a trail that runs through the campground and across the bay toward one of the 2 refineries. That’s it – not much to do tonight.

According to the 3rd hand info that Kyle has gotten, his friend Erick will be in the hospital for at least 10 days because he also has a concussion. Other than that the info has been different each time we talk to him so I’ll wait till things are more definite before I spread erroneous info. We’re still hoping for the best.
