Next day, after warming up the calf muscles we caught the ferry to the nearby village of Portovenere. Unfortunately it started raining when we arrived and turned cool and windy. But even with that I thought it the most lovely place. Lovely painted buildings and lots of little fishing boats. The rain soon stopped and we visited the Gothic Church of St. Peter, consecrated in 1198. However there was a wedding on so we didn’t go in. Instead went to see the church of St. Lawrence, erected in 1098 and the cemetary and fort at the top of the hill. Had some lunch then back to St Peters to see inside and there was another wedding on!! The bells actually played “Here comes the bride”. We could’ve spent longer there but because we weren’t adequately attired, we caught the ferry home in the middle of the afternoon.
