Solar Screens Get A Workout

May 11, 2012

Man o man did we have a blow this afternoon. We had planned on making our last visit out to Arches NP this afternoon. Before we left, however, the sky darkened up and the winds picked up too. After we had just installed the solar screens Carol and I put together back at North Ranch a few weeks ago, they were put to the test.

Earlier this afternoon we decided to put them on for the first time since leaving the SKP park in Congress, AZ. It has been in the hi 80's the last couple of days and was forcasted to be about the same for the next several days so we put them up. After all that's why we made them. The interior of the trailer was about 91 degrees yesterday. And didn't cool off inside until after dark, although the outside temp dropped much earlier. It always cools down in the desert when the sun starts to set.

For the next hour or so I was busy posting to the Journal and those winds started picking up. Before it was over 3 of the screens got blown off the windows. I had mentioned during the post, about making them, that I thought they could have problems because of using some lightweight magnets.

The big back window, which is where we used the heaviest magnets, although it was being buffeted pretty good, never came loose. Don't know for sure how high the winds got but I'm guessing over 25 mph. Carol says the trailer was shaking pretty good, it made her nervous about the rest of the screens coming loose too. Fortunately they didn't.

Wouldn't you know, on top of that happening, we had cleaned the house only this a.m. Sort of like don't wash your car if you don't want rain.

The cats got real tuckered out today and needed a good rest.
