Getting The Trailer Repaired
Mar 24, 2012
We've been here at Leasburg Dam SP for several days now waiting for a new electronic control board. Let me back up just a little.
On Mar 19 we broke camp at Oliver Lee SP and drove back down to Camping World in Anthony, TX. We had gone back so we could have the teflon glides installed under the ends of the sliders. The original ones had started to break up very badly and Dutchman agreed to replace all 6 of the glides. The main, entertainment and bedroom sliders were to be done.
When we pulled into Camping World that Mon. and tried to take the 5th wheel off the truck, the button controlling the front landing gear stopped working. This wasn't the first time this happened. What seems to happen is if the front of the trailer is raised to a certain height, in an attempt to unhook the truck and trailer, the control board is somehow shorted out. What that means is not only the landing gear switch is inopperable but also the switch for the rear stabilizers, all the slide rooms, which are on a single switch inside the trailer, and the awning switch all go dead. We were just able to unhitch the truck using the remote control fob, which in the passed had kept working. This time the fob died also.
So after much discussion with Camping World, Dutchman and Lippert Mfg, the company which makes the frame and hence the control board, agreed to send the 4th controller for replacement, fortunately under warranty. Still none of the above companies can say for sure why 3 boards have gone bad, or how to stop it from happening in the future. I think we are glad we have an extended warranty as the OEM warranty will expire in a couple of months.
Of course we had to wait for Lippert to ship the replacement and with Camping World's help they at least agreed to send it UPS and not just put it on a slow truck from Indiana.
Having had such a problem and having to wait for the part, the head of the service department suggested he come up here to Leasburg Dam, where we would have hook ups and he would bring the part to the campground and install it there. It is after all a case of removing 4 screws and 5 wires and putting them back on the new one and we would be back in business.
While we waited for the part to come in Carol get busy cutting the new solar screen material we had bought at Lowes' Home Improvement, for the all the windows on the Grand Jct. We had seen a 5th wheel in Florida that had some made for his trailer. The owner claimed it really helped keep excess heat out of the rig. His was attached using magnets. One sown into the screen, which would be mounted outside, and another magnet affixed to the inside of the glass window which would draw the 2 magnets together and keep the shade in place. This is how we are going to do our shades too.
We also had a chance to spend several hours with Brenda and Saul today, as we will be leaving tomorrow.
Last night the head of the service department along with his wife and son called and said he was on his way. They showed up around 7 p.m. and had the part in place in a short time. We chatted with him and his family, said or thanks, and they headed home. They live only about 10 minutes from here and that was one reason he suggested he come out to put the part on. It did save us probably a half day by not having to go all the way back to Anthony, which is around 75 miles south of here.
