May 2 – Train to Frankfurt
Good breakfast in our hotel. (Splurged and tried some Nutrell on a croissant!) Back to our room to lock up our luggage and settle the bill. Used our 24-hr. Bus pass for the trip back to the train station to catch the 10:00. During our 4 hour ride we enjoyed seeing lush green scenery with lots of trees, lovely “Swiss” homes, and after Basal, Switzerland, we began to see lots of vineyards climbing straight UP the hillsides.
It was warm when we got to Frankfurt. Had a very nice young taxi driver who shared tips about the city. Our hotel was right downtown, close to shopping and the old city. Our room was again tiny but with some AC to help us feel more comfortable. We got some rest before meeting our fellow RV caravaners and Dieter and Gaby, Wagon masters. Bit of a surprise to find there were just 6 of us: a couple from Kelowna, B.C., a couple from the Chicago area, and us. Though everyone of us has RVs we are the only ones who have been on any caravans before. (We are all in about the same age range.)
We walked a few blocks to the Old Town (such gorgeous architecture, restored after WWII) for a typical German dinner in a 1479 establishment that escaped being bombed. It was a good and fun “Welcome dinner” and I think we'll all get along just great. Tomorrow is the big day when we get our rigs and start to drive...
