Monday, April 30 - to Zurich by train
Ate our last breakfast on the cruise ship; completed their guest survey. Bottom line: great crew, great food, very nice cabin, inadequate seating for movie theater (35 seats for 2,150 passengers) and library; volume for musical shows with singers and dancers too loud. We'll still sail HAL in the future but not on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Prefer smaller older ships (and they have launderettes!)
9:15 – off the ship carrying our luggage a long way to the train station (not accessible by bus or taxi!). Long wait for reservations confirmation and then for the train. Learned the 1st class cars are at the very end of the train! They post the platform number about 10 min. before departure, giving you 10 min. to scurry and get on the train before it pulls out!
On to Milano, seeing beautiful wildflowers and some red poppies, lots of trees and old buildings, agri-cultural fields that turned to vineyards to orchards of fruit trees. In Milano we switched trains for Zurich. Bought a bottle of water that turned out to be mineral water (at 3.30 euros) and upset my tummy. Into the mountains we saw lots of powerful gushing waterfalls, lots of tunnels through the mountains, charming villages in the mountains and some snow on the peaks.
Arrived Zurich 12 min. late! Found an ATM to get some Swiss Francs. Taxi to our hotel where we had a tiny room w/o AC but with free WiFi. I was so exhausted I could hardy eat my tomato soup supper at 9:00 p.m. Ivan enjoyed his schnitzel sandwich and the rest of my soup. Back in our room I promptly went to bed! Quite a day with lots of new learning experiences.
