Manning the barricades on rue des Gravilliers travel blog

After trying for weeks to wriggle into business class using my AMEX points, lo and behold, I find myself ensconced in it between Abu Dhabi and Paris. Bless Etihad Airways. I've already finished my second glass of mersault and am now progressing on to a bordeaux with my meal.

It all began when I presented my boarding pass at the gate and the attendant turned and said 'Mr Robert Baker'. I weakly agreed, sensing what might be about to happen. He then announced my business class seat and I waltzed on by as if to the manor born. (I'm trying to think about a corresponding fairy tale where the innate qualities of the hero/heroine is recognized and they are rewarded. However, all I can think of is Bottom in Midsummer Nights Dream! How deflating...)

Strangely, my first thoughts were rather churlish. I thought, it's quite nice but the plane's looking a bit shabby. What a silly boy. Talk about gift horses.

So, during this 7 hour flight I will be drinking:

Louis Latour Mersault 2006

Chateau Fontenil (Bordeaux) 2006

Domaine de Grange Neuve 2009

and eating:

Arabian mezze

Braised lamb Provencale

Sfoufe.

And maybe there will be more yet.

Meanwhile, apart from imbibing the above, my feet are up, and I'm reading a new Robin Hobb fantasy novel on my iPad.
