Captain Chevasse won 2 Victoria Crosses & 1 Military Medal

Me in the Mousetrap - made by the Belgian soldiers to make...

24/4: Nigel, Dad and I went to Railway Wood where Captain Chevasse(Medical captain) got his Military Cross. Then we went to Sanctuary Wood cemetery where Lieutenant Talbot is buried - he was killed in action and his body wasn't found until his brother said he was going to look for him - and he found his body out on the field close to where a battle was happening. After that we went to Hill 62 and saw the Canadian memorial. The Canadians fought along side the Australians, British, Belgians, French and some other small countries. After that we visited Sanctuary Wood museum and the the wood itself. We saw the trenches that were very muddy because it was very wet around the area and a few posters in the museum trying to make people want o join the army. I think they would have worked - anyway they did work because lots of people joined up! The soldiers joined up for adventure and going overseas.

ANZAC Day 25/4

We woke up at midnight (6am in Albany)to get to the ANZAC Day service in Villers-Bretonneux - we drove to Albert then caught a bus to V-B and it was freezing. The whole time we were there my feet were freezing (4C), it hurt to walk down steps. We caught a bus to Albert then the car back to Ieper. There was an Australian band from Perth playing at the ANZAC Day Service. Villers-Bretonneux is special because it was an Australian victory in a battle 3 years after the tragedy of the Gallipoli landings and it was on Anzac Day 1918. We got a badge that had the Australian and French flag and Dad stuck the badge onto the left hand side where the Australians would have had their Rising Sun badges on their slouch hats.

26/4: we had a lazy one today. I woke up and noticed it was the start of school and I got Ethan and my homework sheets down.
