De Panne

De Panne

Nieuwpoort

Ostend

Veurne

One day we caught a local bus to De Panne over on the coast. It went thru all the little villages via the country roads, so took 1 ½ hours and was a lovely drive. Lots of ploughing being done. Farmers that find live ammo, leave it on the side of the road. Last year alone, 170,000 tonnes of this live ammo was collected by the army. As well as 14 body remains.

De Panne was busy!! It was school holidays and even tho it was only 12C, the beach was like a summers day on the goldcoast! Theres are trams that go up and down the whole coast every 15 min, so we caught one to Nieuwpoort where we walked and walked along the lovely wide boardwalk then on the tram again to Ostend. Near Ostend there is a protected area of sanddunes of maybe a kilometer with all the German bunkers and machine guns still in place; the whole coast would have been the same. Now, the sand dunes have been flattened and almost all covered in pretty ugly low level holiday flats for miles and miles. We stopped at Veaune for an hour on the way home. It has Belgiums best preserved medieval town square. Very pretty it was too. Didn’t get home till after 8pm, but….sun still out!
