Our driver and tour guide pick us up at the hotel around 8:00 am. Our tour guide has bad news ---- the Taj Mahal will not open until midday. A special delegation is getting a private tour. Our alternate plan is to go to the Agra Fort.

Agra Fort was built by Emperor Akbar as his citadel over the years 1563–1573. This powerful fortress of red sandstone was the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. The first line of defense for the fort consisted of two moats. One moat contained water and alligators and a second moat was a nature preserve containing lions and tigers. The fort is surrounded by a six-story high fortification wall. We enter through one of four gates. The entry road is made of brick and has a gentle rise to it. This construction enabled goods to be brought in by camel and elephant. Inside are many beautiful palaces, king’s courts, mosques and gardens built in the imposing Mughal style of art and architecture.
