We toured the Tuzigoot National Monument which is a partially restored Indian pueblo and museum. Approximately 800 years ago, this Singua pueblo was home to the Native American population once inhabiting this area. It began as a collection of small rooms that were home to about 50 residents, but as the population grew, so did the pueblo. By the 1300’s it consisted of 110 rooms and was home to 225 people. In the 1400’s the residents mysteriously left. Some possible explanations include over-population, depletion of natural resources, disease, warfare, religious reasons, or drought.

After visiting the moument we headed to Clarksdale to ride the Verde Canyon Railroad which winds through the remote wilderness of the Verde Canyon and follows the Verde River. This was a four hour train ride with beautiful scenery. We saw a few eagles flying, evidence of beaver on the river and Indian ruins. The music and commentary provided by the conductor made it great trip.
