A String of American Coots

Mondays are my full day at FUMC Groesbeck. In the morning, I go into the church office to answer the phone, transfer calls and greet visitors. Not long after my arrival, one of my friends, Linda, came to paint the frame of the newly installed glass window in the pastor’s door. Linda is my friend that I have gotten to know through the Stitchers group, the Friendship Luncheon, and through the Friday morning ladies gathering. Since she was working about six feet from my desk, we had a wonderful opportunity to talk. She got finished about 11:30 and asked me to get some lunch with her. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity even though it meant that I left my volunteer post about a half-hour early. We went to Charlie’s to get a hamburger. Then, we drove to her house. Linda is very artistic and she wanted to show me a couple of her home improvement projects. When she and her husband, Ron, moved from Houston to Groesbeck, one of their jobs was to own and run a peach orchard with 3000 trees. She sponge printed and painted their master bath to reflect that endeavor; it was totally gorgeous. She had colorful brick walls in some areas with beautiful peach limbs (complete with blooms and fruit) spread out in a section. Wow! What talent. While I was visiting, she pulled up their pictures from their trip to Ireland and Scotland taken two years ago. They went during March and were able to experience St. Patrick’s Day while they were there. So many of the things that they saw are things I have researched and are on my list of things to do. I wanted to get more of the specifics, but we had to leave to go to Stitchers.

At Stitchers, I was able to work on a section that gave me experience at every kind of row that I will need to be able to do to complete my entire afghan. Mary helped me to understand the directions for each row. Now that I have completed this much, I feel confident that I will be able to finish the whole project on my own.

At the conclusion of our sewing time, one of the ladies, Betty, proposed everyone going to lunch next week since it would be my last Monday. We decided to go to lunch on Monday and to go to Frankie’s (so far in the Groesbeck/Mexia area, it is, by far, my favorite). How very nice…

We sew for about two hours each Monday. About 3:00, we wrap it up and go our separate ways. Since I only have about two weeks left at Fort Parker State Park, I need to get my curriculum project finished. I stopped off at the Springfield Cemetery to get a few missing facts that I need to complete my student-activity for that area of the park.

The weatherman has talked about an incoming storm all day. Some of the ladies in the stitching group were apprehensive about coming, worried that the storm would hit. It has been cloudy and dark all day. Once I got back to the trailer, I spent time reading over and editing all of my curriculum activities. I need to complete a couple of things that require Internet access, but I should be able to send all of my documents to Mike, one of the rangers, and to my contact in Groesbeck ISD soon.

Before I went to bed, I wanted to look at my atlas and plan my route to my next state park venue, Village Creek State Park in Lumberton. Since it is so big, I had my atlas stored between the couch and the wall. When I got the atlas out, I noticed that the bottom four inches of the book were damp and wrinkled from moisture. I further investigated and found that the carpet in that space was also damp and so was the box storing my paper shredder and my package of colored folders that I recently purchased. So, I spread out the folders and the atlas on the floor to dry. I will be adding this leak to my list of trailer repairs to be addressed when I take it in for warranty work. I can’t decide if I want to take my trailer in next week or wait until May when I will be back in the Dallas area. It is so expensive to pull it all the way to Dallas and then back down to the Beaumont area.
