20th March 2012 Abu Simbel

An early 5.30am wakeup call got us up to breakfast before we boarded the plane in Aswan for a 45 min flight to Abu Simbel. These are possibly the most awe inspiring temples of all ancient Egypt. With its gigantic rock cut facade, was created to revere the mighty ruler Ramses 11. Guarding the entrance to the temple, 4 colossal statues of Ramses 11 sat majestically staring out across the dessert. Our guide explained the amazing story of how the temples had been relocated in a multi-million dollar operation in 1972. The temples were moved 200 meters back & 60 meters up from the original location. This was necessary because the creation of Lake Nasser threatened to erode the foundation of this temple complex. Lots of photos were taken, but unfortunately, we were not allowed to take photos inside the temples.
